One of the most important economic activities in Nigeria is the processing of palm fruit for the production of palm kernel and palm oil.
Since 2011-2012, the consumption of palm oil in Nigeria has been relatively stable, and the country consumes about 1.405 million tons of palm oil every year.
Palm oil and palm kernel used to account for 20% of Nigeria’s total exports.
The domestic price of palm oil in Nigeria is almost the same as the import price of the product, which includes a 35% duty.
The traditional market for Nigerian palm oil is typically dominated by the industry’s small-scale producers, which account for more than 70% of total local production, which totals around 650,000 tonnes. What makes palm oil so popular is its high oil yield, which is more than 10 times higher than palm fruit compared to sunflower seeds or soybeans.
After global palm oil production and demand grew in tandem from 1964 to 2010, palm oil demand in the global market began to grow faster than supply. Overall, the global palm oil market may now be short of 150,000 metric tons per year.
However, the industry’s market share has been declining since then due to overexploitation and reliance on traditional production methods. Now, Nigeria even has to import more than 500,000 tons of palm oil every year to meet domestic demand. Since 2001, Nigeria has banned the entry of bulk crude oil and refined vegetable oils. With the establishment of the agricultural development plan and the innovation of the agricultural practice system, the Nigerian palm oil industry will undoubtedly enter a new stage of development.
However, one of the challenges plaguing the development of the Nigerian palm oil industry is the inefficiency of its processing technology, with post-harvest losses of up to 50% of palm fruit.
Therefore, Nigerian palm oil producers are in urgent need of perfect palm oil production line equipment.
